Project Introduction.
a cutting-edge baggage system enhancing efficiency
Heathrow Airport, located in London, is one of the busiest and most significant international airports in the world. Renowned for its state-of-the-art facilities and commitment to passenger experience, Heathrow has implemented a cutting-edge Baggage System Programme to enhance efficiency and streamline the handling of passenger luggage. This program incorporates advanced technology, such as automated sorting systems and RFID tracking, to ensure accurate and timely baggage delivery. The goal is to minimise delays, improve overall operational performance, and provide passengers with a seamless travel experience.
As part of this Project, Heathrow had to transition from a single PMO to two PMOs acting on behalf of the Client and Contractor respectively for Heathrow Airport' s New Baggage System programme.

The Problem.
While the majority of processes remained similar to those of the preceding periods, the implementation of novel systems posed a challenge, as few individuals possessed familiarity or prior experience with them. This made operational efficiency difficult, leading to misaligned processes, low Project Management Office (PMO) maturity, and limited flexibility. The need for a solution became apparent, with the need to streamline these processes and foster a comprehensive understanding of the newly introduced systems.
Our Solution.
In response to the identified challenges, Movar implemented a systematic approach, starting with a thorough understanding of the requirements by drawing on past experiences. Discussion with existing consultants within the campus provided valuable insights into their experiences and challenges, informing decision-making. Rigorous trials and tests were conducted to ensure the effectiveness of proposed solutions, emphasising collaboration with other PMO teams for alignment and buy-in from the supply chain.
The introduction of innovative ways of working aimed to optimise efficiency, supported by workshops to familiarise colleagues and clients with upcoming changes, fostering a culture of adaptability. Through a collaborative environment, actions were captured and diligently followed up on. Prioritising the capture of lessons learned ensured continuous improvement, preventing the recurrence of adverse situations and propelling the organisation towards future success.
